Image: Froch wants a fight against Calzaghe, but may have to settle for Cleverly or PascalBy William Mackay: WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch is still holding out hope that former super middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe will come out of retirement to face him after Froch completes his final bout in the Super Six tournament against Andre Ward later on this year.

In an article at the southwalesargus.co.uk, Froch said “We still may see me fight Joe Calzaghe, who I heard is back in the gym and on the pads.”

Froch shouldn’t get his hopes up for a bout against Calzaghe because it’s extremely doubtful that Calzaghe will be making a comeback and even if he does, he would make better money facing someone like Bernard Hopkins or the Super Six tournament winner if Froch doesn’t end up winning. Froch isn’t favored to beat Ward, and that’s going to be a huge obstacle for Froch getting a fight against Calzaghe. The last thing that Calzaghe would want to do is fight a guy that was just beaten in a Super Six finals.

Froch may need to downsize his ambitions and be a little more realistic and go after someone like WBO light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly, who is very eager to fight Froch. It’s a fight that would be doing Cleverly more of a favor than Froch, but it would be a good fight for him to take if and when he gets beaten by Ward.

Another opponent that Froch wants is Mikkel Kessler, a fighter that Froch was beaten by last year in the Super Six tournament. Froch wants to try and avenge that defeat. However, Kessler won’t waste time fighting Froch if Froch gets beaten by Ward. Kessler is looking to go after winners/champions, not fighters that are coming off a loss like Froch. It’s bad for Froch if he gets beaten by Ward. Froch may have to settle for the likes of Cleverly and/or Jean Pascal. Those are fights that Froch can probably get unless he’s really beaten badly by Ward. In that case, I think Froch may have to shoot a lot lower than these guys because they may not want to fight a guy that was destroyed by Ward.
