Chisora vs. Fury: Tyson has the height advantage but little else

By Sean McDaniel: 23-year-old unbeaten heavyweight Tyson Fury (14-0, 10 KO’s) will have a considerable height and reach advantage when he fights British heavyweight champion Dereck Chisora (14-0, 9 KO’s) next month on July 23 at the Wembley Arena, Wembley, London.

But apart from his size advantage, which may end up being a meaningless asset, most of the other advantages side with Chisora. Of the two fighters, Chisora has the better power, better hand speed and is the much better inside fighter.

On the inside is where this bout figures to take place. Fury’s trainer Emanuel Steward will of course warn Fury from trying to fight Chisora on the inside, but it’s doubtful that Fury will be able to follow Steward’s instructions consistently enough to stay on the outside for any length of time.

Fury has simply spent too many years being an inside fighter and it’s almost second nature for him to fall to the inside and start punching when he fights. It may not matter even if Fury tries to keep the battle on the outside because Fury doesn’t have the weapons needed to keep the fight at a distance.

Chisora will walk through Fury’s weak jabs to get in close enough to land his big power shots. And Fury doesn’t seem to be able to keep jabbing and fighting from the outside. You can see in some of his recent fights were Fury has attempted to keep to the outside but he gives up after two or three rounds and goes back to his old style of mauling his opponents in close.
