Image: Calzaghe: Haye's punching power is frightening; he's lean, mobile and moving like a middleweightBy William Mackay: For super middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe is very impressed with how good WBA heavyweight champion David Haye (25-1, 23 KO’s) after Calzaghe took the time to visit the 30-year-old Haye at his training camp to watch him go through his paces while he gets ready for his July 2nd bout against IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (55-3, 49 KO’s) in Hamburg, Germany. Calzaghe was pleased with Haye’s power, and noted how slender Haye is looking now.

In an article at boxrec.com, Calzaghe said “The punch power he [Haye] is showing on the pads is frightening and everything is thrown with speed. He’s moving like a middleweight with heavyweight power…He’s very lean and mobile, too.”

Let’s put things in perspective here. It’s easy to look good at throwing punches at his trainer’s mitts but Wladimir won’t be just standing there at close range letting the much smaller Haye tag him all night. Calzaghe should know this. If Haye is moving like a middleweight it’s only because of how lean he is for this fight. It looks like Haye has decided to stay light for this fight and come in at a lower weight to try duplicate his performance against the slow and timid 6’6″ Audley Harrison in his last fight. Haye was able to destroy Harrison in three rounds in a fight where Harrison only threw one punch. Being smaller against a skilled fighter as large as Wladimir might not bring the same results for Haye as it did against Harrison. Haye might find out that he’s too light to compete with Wladimir on July 2nd. All that speed that Calzaghe is speaking about could be a curse fro Haye.
