If, however, Chavez Jr. wins the Zbik fight, Martinez realizes his chance of fighting Chavez Jr. are very remote, as he feels Chavez Jr. won’t fight him.

Martinez is perhaps a bit too dangerous for the hittable Chavez Jr. to fight. Martinez is also interested in fighting Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. But those fights aren’t likely to ever happen even with a catchweight. Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum isn’t eager to put Pacquiao in with the hard hitting Martinez and risk having Pacquiao get hurt. And Mayweather isn’t fighting anyone right now, least of all a dangerous puncher like Martinez.

Martinez defeated previously unbeaten Serhiy Dzinziruk by an 8th round stoppage last March. Before that, Martinez stopped Paul Williams in a 2nd round knockout. Martinez is fighting at a very high level right now, and perhaps a little too good for him to get the big fights that he’s hoping to get. It may be that Martinez has to age a little bit more, show a lot more vulnerability before he can get a big fight against one of the aforementioned big stars. When a fighter is looking as formidable as Martinez is right now, the top fighters tend to avoid them like the plague and go after more beatable contenders.

In an interview at boxscore.com, Martinez said this about Pacquiao’s recent fight against 39-year-old Shane Mosley: “He (Pacquiao) didn’t show much to me in his last fight with Shane Mosley, which I thought was boring. Manny Pacquiao is working his business by picking boxers he knows he can beat and are pretty close to retirement.”

Martinez needs to forget about the Pacquiao fight because it’s obvious that he’s not going to be getting that fight. Instead, Martinez should focus on taking on the best fighters at middleweight or junior middleweight.
