Omar Chavez stops Genaro Trazancos, looks terrible

By Dan Ambrose: Unbeaten welterweight prospect Omar Chavez (26-0-1, 19 KO’s) has his work cut out for him if he ever wants to be anything close to what his famous father Julio Cesar Chavez was as a fighter. Omar looked nothing short of terrible in beating journeyman Genaro Trazancos (22-15-1, 13 KO’s) by a 4th round TKO last Saturday night at the Palenque del FEX, Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico.

Chavez knocked Trazancos down in the 2nd round with a hard right and then finished him off with a some hard blasts in the 4th that caused referee Alberto Ramos to step in and end the fight at 0:56. However, Chavez was hit far too much in this fight and spent a good deal of the time taking clean shots and trying to cover up. This isn’t a good sign for 21-year-old Chavez’s future potential because Trazancos is someone that Chavez should have been able to run over if he were a really good fighter.

After all, Trazancos came into the fight having lost 11 out of his last 13 fights with 9 of the defeats coming by knockout. Chavez reminds me of a smaller version of Julio Chavez Jr. He seems to be flawed in the same ways that his bigger brother Chavez Jr. is and that’s not a good thing. Omar doesn’t look like a good fit at welterweight, because he’s not a huge puncher and his defense if terrible. But at 21, it’s unreasonable to see Chavez moving back down to light welterweight. If anything, Chavez will only get bigger and end up at junior middleweight and really be in trouble.
