Jones looks fat for Lebedev bout

By Dan Ambrose: 42-year-old Roy Jones Jr. (54-7, 40 KO’s) weighed in at a fat-looking 198.5 lbs for his bout on Saturday night against top cruiserweight contender Denis Lebedev (21-1, 16 KO’s) for a fight that will be taking place at the Sport Complex Krylatskoe, in Moscow, Russia. Lebedev looked a lot better at a firm looking 200 lbs.

Jones is moving up in weight from light heavyweight to cruiserweight in hopes of beating Lebedev and then going after one of the champions in the division. However, Jones’ chances of beating Lebedev aren’t very good. If you ignore how fat and old Jones looked at Friday’s weigh-in, he’s still lost three out of his last five bouts and hasn’t beaten a quality fighter since he won a controversial 12 round majority decision over Antonio Tarver back in 2003.

That was really the last top guy that Jones beat, and it’s hard to say that Jones really won that fight because a lot of people felt that Jones should have lost. It’s been ages since Jones picked up a good win, and tomorrow night he’s going to be facing one of the best fighters in the cruiserweight division – if not the best. Jones is almost begging to be knocked out by facing someone as good as Lebedev in his home country. Jones used to be really careful about who he would face earlier in his career, and he never would fight guys outside of the United States. But now it seems like Jones doesn’t turn down any quality fights, even though he’s not winning anymore.

Lebedev is a fighter that Jones should have stayed away from until he had tested himself against some lower level cruiserweights and gotten used to the weight class. Lebedev is a monster and he’s going to put a serious hurting on Jones. I would pick Lebedev to mop the deck with recent Jones conqueror Danny Green right now. I think Lebedev would be too much for Green. But now you have Jones facing a guy that really is way out of his class and it’s probably not going to go well for Roy.
