Image: Johnson's team sees Froch as too slow to win on June 4thBy Scott Gilfoid: The trainer for Glen Johnson (51-14-2, 35 KO’s), Orlando Cuellar, sees WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch (27-1, 20 KO’s) as a step down from Chad Dawson, the guy that Johnson fought twice and lost to in close 12 round decisions in 2008 and 2009. Johnson is now facing a much slower and less skilled fighter in Froch on June 4th in their Super Six tournament semifinals bout at the Boardwalk Hall, in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Cueller said “For us, Froch will be an easy fight. If Glen did as well as he did against Chad Dawson, we believe he should do very well against Froch. Froch isn’t as fast or mobile as Dawson. Glen has the faster hands and feet. he has better body work and better defense. The only advantage Froch has is age and Glen has shown he’s only gotten better with age.”

I think I agree with Cueller. Froch isn’t as fast nor as skilled as Dawson. That’s pretty much a given when you see the two fighters fight. Froch doesn’t have Dawson’s technical brilliance or his ability to move around the ring. Froch is a lot slower than Dawson. And the weird part about it all, Froch is even slower than the 42-year-old Johnson. That’s the real strange part of it. Johnson does well against plodders like Froch.

I mean you couldn’t make a more perfect opponent for Johnson to beat if you tried. That’s not that Froch isn’t a good figher. He certainly is, but Froch is more like the super middleweight’s version of Kelly Pavlik, a slow fighter that punches hard but who doesn’t well or change directions quickly. Johnson is much better inside fighter and body puncher than Froch. And Johnson has just as good power as Froch in my estimation. This is a fight that’s going to take place at close range and we’re likely going to see parts falling off on under the strain.
