Johnson to destroy Froch’s big plans for the future

Image: Johnson to destroy Froch's big plans for the futureBy Scott Gilfoid: To listen to WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch (27-1, 20 KO’s) tell you, he’s got it all planned out with him beating Glen Johnson (51-14-2, 35 KO’s) in their Super Six tournament semifinals bout on June 4th and then meeting WBA champion Andre Ward in the finals of the Super Six and beating him. Froch then sees himself facing and beating Mikkel Kessler in a rematch followed by a rematch with WBC light heavyweight champion Jean Pascal and then a dream match against Joe Calzaghe.

Unfortunately, a little thing called reality has a way of bumping into guys like Froch and upsetting their pipe dreams. I hate to be the one to break this to Froch and his loving fans but Johnson is the going spoil all of Froch’s plans. Oh, I still think Froch can fight at least one of those fighters mentioned, possibly Pascal after he gets beaten by Bernard Hopkins this Saturday night, but it would be a fight that will likely only interest Froch’s British fans or the fans of Pascal in Canada.

Once Johnson takes care of Froch on June 4th, the chances of Froch getting fights against Kessler, Calzaghe, which I don’t see happening no matter what comes of the Johnson-Froch fight, is pretty much impossible. Getting beaten isn’t the end for Froch, but it will likely result in him having to downsize his big fight dreams something fierce. I don’t see Kessler wanting to waste time with fighting Froch against after he loses to 42-year-old Johnson.

I mean why would Kessler want to fight fight Froch after that? He already beat Froch soundly a year ago, and he wouldn’t gain much from beating a guy that was just beaten by Johnson. I don’t that Pascal would want that fight either, especially if he loses to Hopkins. Pascal is going to need to face a winner if he wants to get the attention of the boxing world and he can’t afford to be facing guys coming off a loss like Froch will likely be.

If I’m Froch, I’d forget about all those fights. The one fight I think Froch needs to take coming off a loss to Johnson will be a rematch with the talented Andre Dirrell. Froch beat him by a controversial 12 round split decision two years ago in a fight that few people outside of the UK felt Froch won. I had Dirrell winning by an easy 8 rounds to 3 with 1 even score. If they were to fight a rematch in a neutral country like Canada, I could see the fight being big. It would be a win-win for both fighters and Dirrell could avenge his defeat.
