Image: Groves: You can see by my face DeGale didn't catch meBy Scott Gilfoid: It was sad to see how badly George Groves was in denial about how marked up and battered he was in his fight with the talented James DeGale last night. Groves looked like he dragged himself out of a massive train wreck to give his post fight interview. Groves’ face was covered with bruises and blood, making him look like the clear loser in the fight. I have no doubts that DeGale should have won the fight, but Groves seemed to be disconnected from reality about how terrible he looked and performed.

Speaking after the bout, a battered looking Groves said “You can see by my face he didn’t catch me.”

What on earth was Groves talking about? Didn’t catch him? DeGale not only caught him but covered him with bruises in literally every inch of his entire head that I could see. Oh, it’s sad when a fighter has delusions of grandeur after their fights. Groves needs to sit down, have a nice cup of coffee and watch the fight again so he can see how he was in face caught by DeGale’s punches.

Groves continued with his out of touch with reality talk, saying “I’ll never let anyone beat me. I always had his number. I’m moving on to bigger and better things.”

I think someone will beat Groves. It’s nice to say that he’ll never let anyone beat him, but the fact is Groves just went life and death with DeGale and got what I consider a gift decision. Given that DeGale isn’t considered the best super middleweight in the division, I just don’t know how Groves is going to keep from never letting anyone beat him unless he’s going to steer clear of top fighters after this fight. I think Groves can win forever if he faces C level fighters, but if he steps it up against world class guys, Groves is going to get beat over and over again no matter how much running he does. The thing is Groves isn’t a big puncher. That’s just the reality of it. He has to be a runner because we saw what happened every time he would stop running against DeGale last night. DeGale was battering him. Groves had to run otherwise he would have been knocked out.
