Froch wants Kessler and Pascal rematches

By Scott Gilfoid: WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch (27-1, 20 KO’s) is dreaming of fighting rematches against Mikkel Kessler and Jean Pascal. It burns Froch that Kessler was able to beat him last year in the Super Six tournament and Froch wants to try and avenge that defeat.

Froch looked horrible in that fight and didn’t seem to be able to handle the aggression and the combinations from Kessler. The fight was close but it was pretty clear to all that Froch had lost. It’s unclear why Froch wants to fight Pascal again. That seems like a waste of time, as Froch already beat Pascal clearly by a 12 round decision in December 2008.

It seems like a regressive thing to go back and fight Pascal again, especially with Pascal looking so horrible in his fight with Bernard Hopkins. It’ll be interesting to see if Froch still wants to waste time fighting Pascal again if he loses to Hopkins on Saturday. Talk about your silly fights. I can see it now, Froch fighting Pascal after he’s been dominated by Hopkins and puts himself in the situation where he’ll get no credit for beating Pascal again.

Speaking with the morningstaronline.co.uk, Froch said “The first pick for me would be the Kessler fight. I’ve had a decision go against me with him and I want to rectify that immediately. I don’t think that’s the biggest fight out there. The Pascal fight at light-heavyweight is a big, big fight. The Calzaghe fight is a dream fight, not just for me, but all fight fans would want to see it and if that fight can happen it’s a fight that should happen. I know he’s been retired and out of the gym for a while, but it’s not something you can rule out.”

Honestly, it sounds like Froch is really reaching here. Joe Calzaghe probably isn’t going to ever come back, so Froch needs to let that go. And the Pascal rematch isn’t a big, big fight like Froch thinks it is, especially once Pascal gets schooled by 46-year-old Hopkins.

Once Pascal gets beaten by Hopkins and then beaten again by Chad Dawson or someone else, few people will care to see Froch face Pascal. And I’m not even going into the troubles that Froch faces in the Super Six tournament in his upcoming fight with Glen Johnson. I see Froch losing that fight and once he does, do you think anyone will care to see Froch fight Pascal and Kessler again? I don’t see the interest being there. I mean there may be interest but not the kind of interest there would be if Froch wasn’t beaten.

If I was Froch, I’d forget all about fighting Pascal and Kessler again. He needs to move forward and go after someone like Kelly Pavlik. He’s flawed and slow, and it would be a good fight to see Froch and him go at it. There both painfully slow and it would be like watching mirrored images fighting. If Froch faces Kessler again, he’s only going to get beat again and probably get all upset about it and say that he won. It’s best for Froch to save himself the aggravation and just fight some new guys. By going back in the past so much, it seems kind of weird to me, like Froch can’t let go. Things always look better in retrospect.
