Image: Froch saying he's going to box Johnson on June 4thBy Scott Gilfoid: WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch plans on changing his usual slugging style of fighting in his next semifinals Super Six tournament fight against Glen Johnson on June 4th at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Froch usually goes right after his opponents and tries to quickly beat them down to get a knockout or at the very least gain control over the fight. At the Super Six level, Froch has hit a dry spell where he’s been unable to score knockouts and has found himself struggling in two of the three fights.

Froch has won two of the three in the Super Six tourney, but is lucky, incredibly lucky not to have lost two out of the three bouts. One of Froch’s wins was a questionable decision over Andre Dirrell, and that many people saw Dirrell winning. Froch now is going to change his slugging style altogether for the Johnson fight and try to box him. I can’t see Froch being able to change what he’s always been but it should be interesting to see him at least try to change his style.

Speaking with Sky Sports Ringside, Froch said “I’m going to jab and move, hit and don’t get hit back; work rate at range, move. Johnson tends to walk you down. It’s my job to use my boxing ability to make the night easy as possible. I’m not out there to crack a cranium or break his jaw. I’m in there to win and points and not get hit back.”

It looks like Froch has checked out some of Johnson’s fights and realizes that it’s a lot safer for him to avoid mixing it up with him than it would be to stand in front of him all night long trying to out-punch Johnson and end up getting hurt or badly depleted. What could is it to win if there isn’t much left of you after winning? It would just make Andre Ward’s job that much easier in the finals of the Super Six tournament.

Like I said, it sounds all well and good that Froch intends on boxing Johnson but I don’t believe Froch can change his basic style of fight to win a decision on points. Froch is what he is. He’s always been a slugger and for him to try and change that for an important fight like the Johnson bout is like trying to change a fastball pitcher into a junkball pitcher over night and think you’re going to have the same success. It doesn’t work like that. Froch would be better off sticking to what got him to this point in the first place.
