Diaconu giving up 1/2 foot in height to Dawson

By Dan Ambrose: If you want to see something really interesting on Saturday night you need to watch the bout between light heavyweights Chad Dawson (29-1, 17 KO’s) and Adrian Diaconu (27-2, 15 KO’s) because the height differences alone is going to make for a compelling fight. At Friday’s weigh-in, the 5’9″ Diaconu looked like a fighter from two divisions below the 6’3″ Dawson when the two were standing for the traditional stare-down after having weighed in for the fight.

Diaconu looked incredibly short and had to crane his neck up just to see Dawson eye to eye. With that kind of size advantage, Dawson is going to find it really easy to jab from the outside and control the fight against the shorter Diaconu. I know some boxing fans feel that size doesn’t matter in boxing, but I think it does. When you got a fighter with the kind of boxing skills that Dawson possesses and then you give him a six inch height advantage over someone like Diaconu, I think Dawson wins 100 out 100 times.

I don’t see how Diaconu can even make it competitive because he’s just too short. This isn’t wrestling. Diaconu is going to have try to find a way to get beyond Dawson’s huge height and reach advantage. Dawson will likely bend his knees and widen his stance to get down to Diaconu’s level, but Dawson’s huge reach will still be there giving him all the advantages he needs to win this fight without any problems.

If Diaconu is smart, he’ll rush Dawson every round and try to plant himself on Dawson like glue. Maybe the referee won’t care if Diaconu starts wrestling on the inside. That’s really the only chance Diaconu has of winning this fight.
