Image: Cleverly wants a shot against Froch after Braehmer fightBy William Mackay: If World Boxing Organization (WBO) light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly (21-0, 10 KO’s) can beat WBO light heavyweight champion Jurgen Braehmer (36-2, 29 KO’s) in their fight on May 21st, then Cleverly next wants to take on WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch (27-1, 20 KO’s).

Speaking with the dailystar.co.uk, Cleverly said “If I beat Braehmer and get the world title it will open so many doors. Carl Froch would be a great one for the UK. Provided Carl wins the Super Six then moves up to light heavyweight and I win the world title, I don’t see why it can’t happen.”

It sounds like a bit of a pipe dream at the moment. Froch’s chances of winning the Super Six tourney are about nil, and once he’s finished the tourney, Froch is talking about wanting to fight guys like IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute, James DeGale, Mikkel Kessler, and Sergio Martinez. Froch would obviously be interested in taking the fight with Cleverly, but I can’t see Froch moving up in weight to light heavyweight anytime soon. I think Froch will wait until he’s exhausted all his opportunities at super middleweight before moving up to the light heavyweight division.

By moving up in weight immediately after he leaves the Super Six tournament, he will put on weight and get further away from guys like Martinez, who is currently fighting at middleweight but talking about moving down in weight to junior middleweight. For Froch to get the better fighters at super middleweight, he needs to stay at this weight class rather than moving up in weight to fight a still largely unknown guy like Cleverly. That fight still needs at least year or more to build before they make the fight.
