Arreola stops Aguilera in 3rd round

By Jason Kim: Much lighter than he usually is, heavyweight contender Chris Arreola had an easy time on Saturday night, stopping a badly out of his class Nagy Aguilera in the third round on the undercard of the Andre Ward vs. Arthur Abraham fight at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California. Arreola came into the fight weighing only 234, which was 30 less than what he had weighed for one of his fights a year ago.

Arreola was looking to take Aguilera out quickly, as he really went after him attacking him with hard power shots. Aguilera, a fighter that is usually the one attacking his opponents and looking to out-slug them, wanted no part of Arreola and was in full flight for much of the fight. Indeed, Aguilera showed some nifty footwork that few boxing fans or experts thought he had in him. He ran until Arreola caught up with him in the third and opened up with an avalanche of punches that led to the fight being halted after Arreola landed one especially brutal fight hand head shot.

The win was an important one for Arreola, as it keeps him in the heavyweight mix. If he can keep his weight low, Arreola can take out one of the top contenders and find himself in a good position to get another title shot once WBA heavyweight champion David Haye retires later on this year. Tomasz Adamek will likely be knocked out by Vitali Klitschko in September, leaving Arreola as one of the top contenders in the division. It would great to see him in a rematch with Adamek, who beat Arreola not long ago by a 12 round decision.
