What makes Haye so dangerous?

By Scott Gilfoid: Why is WBA heavyweight champion David Haye (25-1, 23 KO’s) so dangerous to fight for the older heavyweights that he’s been facing since he moved up in weight? I was trying to figure out because I haven’t been too impressed with what I’ve seen of him in his fights at heavyweight.

What I’ve learned after watching Haye’s fights against Monte Barrett, Audley Harrison and John Ruiz is that Haye throws a mean rabbit punch. I got to say that right there may be the number one factor I can see that makes him really dangerous to his unwary opponents.

Besides his textbook rabbit shots that he throws on occasion, he seems to be pretty dangerous at punching while in a clinch with his opponents. Here both of them are holding onto each other in a clinch and Haye just starts teeing off with head shots while his opponents are looking dumbfounded, like they never expected it.

Heck, all they had to do is look at some of Haye’s old fights like me and they’d have known better than to try even one clinch with him. All it takes is what good clinch and Haye has got the fight won with his flurries. You got to make a mental note yourself when fighting Haye – stay away from clinching at all costs.

Okay, so Haye is dangerous with the rabbit shots and deadly with his punching while in a clinch. The other thing that makes Haye so dangerous is his ability to grab his opponent around the neck with his left hand and punch living daylights out of them with his right hand – In other words, the old holding and hitting.

If you look at when Haye is busy unloading one of his flurries, his left arm will snake out sometimes during the action and reach around the back of his opponents’ head pulling it forward just enough so he can land some nice uppercuts. By the time the referee has got a clue about what’s happening it’s too late; Haye already blasted them with five or six big shots.

So there it is. This is what makes Haye so dangerous for his opponents as far as I can tell. His pot shots from the outside aren’t all that dangerous because of how short he is and how for the punch has to travel before it lands.
