Image: Should Samuel Peter retire?By Dan Ambrose: Former WBC heavyweight champion Samuel Peter (34-15, 27 KO’s) was knocked out by the second time in a row last Saturday night against 6’6” Robert Helenius at the Gerry Weber Stadium, in Halle, Germany. Peter looked defeated even before he entered the ring.

Peter came into the fight weighting a hefty 259, a fight weight for him. How Peter could let himself come into an important fight like this so out of shape is beyond me. He still has excellent power and skills good enough to pick up one of the titles if given a chance against the weakest of the three heavyweight champions WBA heavyweight champ David Haye.

However, Peter just didn’t like the same fighter he once was. The extra weight that he was carrying around limited his stamina in the Helenius fight, making it difficult for Peter to move around without gasping once the fight made it to the midpoint.

Helenius looked vulnerable and was easily backed up to the ropes. But Peter just didn’t take advantage of all the opportunities that were there for him. This loss was a crucial one because Peter isn’t going to be given any title shots unless he can beat one or two of the top contender.

Peter doesn’t look capable of that at this point coming into the fight as heavy as he was last weekend. Peter needs to either get his mind right and trim down the flab or get out of the sport to save himself punishment. He’s got too much talent to be punching bag for younger fighters to beat up.
