Image: Khan says that McCloskey told the doctor he didn’t want to continue fightingBy Sean McDaniel: Previously unbeaten Paul McCloskey (22-1, 12 KO’s) wasn’t happy with his 6th round technical decision loss to WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (25-1, 17 KO’s) on Saturday night saying that he felt that the referee and ringside doctor were too quick to stop the fight due to a small cut that he had over his left eye from a head clash in the round. However, Khan said after the fight that it was McCloskey who told the ringside doctor that he didn’t want to continue fight.

Khan said “The doctor asked him if he was okay, but McCloskey said ‘No, he didn’t want to carry on.”

How Khan would be able to know this is the question. During the moment that McCloskey was being questioned by the ringside doctor, Khan was on the other side of the ring and not anywhere near McCloskey and the doctor. Was Khan only guessing at what went on with McCloskey and the ringside physician? If McCloskey did ask the doctor to stop the fight it’s hard to understand why he would be so upset with the stoppage after the fact. There’s something not quite right about this. McCloskey was really complaining something fierce about having lost his big chance. It would seem almost insane for him to do this if he were the one that asked the doctor to stop the fight.

McCloskey has no complaint about the stoppage if he was the whole reason for it to be stopped in the first place. Was McCloskey worried enough to ask the doctor to stop the fight? I can’t believe he would be because he seemed to be doing a decent job against Khan at that point in the fight and wasn’t taking serious punishment, other than the head clash.
