Khan says he’ll give McCloskey a rematch if he beats all the fighters on his resume

By Sean McDaniel: WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (25-1, 17 KO’s) used a different way of telling Ireland’s Paul McCloskey (22-1, 12 KO’s) that he wasn’t going to ever give him a rematch by saying in their post-fight press conference that if the 31-year-old McCloskey can beat all the guys that Khan has beaten during his pro career, including Marcos Maidana, Khan would then give McCloskey a rematch.

In other words, Khan isn’t going to be fighting McCloskey again. The chances of McCloskey beating guys like Maidana, Andriy Kotelnik and Paulie Malignaggi aren’t good to say the least. But that just makes you wonder why Khan chose to fight McCloskey in the first place. When you choose weak opposition to fight, like McCloskey, there’s a good chance that you’re going to end up looking bad if you struggle to win.

Khan looked bad in the McCloskey fight, missing with a lot of his shots and tiring by the end of the fight in the 6th. Luckily for Khan, the fight ended early due to a head clash that opened up a cut above McCloskey’s left eye in the 6th and the ringside doctor hastily stopped the fight instead of giving McCloskey’s corner any chance to try and stop the bleeding in between rounds.

Khan says he has bigger fish to fry such as WBC/WBO light welterweight champion Timothy Bradley (27-0, 11 KO’s), who Khan may end up fighting this summer if everything goes alright with the negotiations between the two champions. Khan then may either move up in weight to chase one of the welterweight belts or stay at light welterweight to fight IBF champion Zab Judah.
