Wolak hoping to get a fight against Chavez Jr. if he wins in June

By Jim Dower: Junior middleweight contender Pawel Wolak (29-1, 19 KO’s) is hoping to take on Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. if he beats WBC middleweight champion Sebastian Zbik on June 4th in their title fight. Wolak is coming off a 6th round stoppage win over former WBA junior middleweight champion Yuri Foreman on March 12th, punishing Foreman on the inside with short, chopping power shots that eventually caused Foreman to quit on his stool after the 6th round rather than continuing to fight and take punishment from Wolak.

The win was a huge one for Wolak, who immediately said he’d like to fight Miguel Cotto, Saul Alvarez and Cornelius Bundradge. However, it’s not likely that Wolak is going to get a shot against any of those guys any time soon and that’s perhaps partly because of how good Wolak looked in his win over Foreman.

Wolak looked powerful and unstoppable in that fight and potential opponents might not want to get in the ring and be on the receiving end of his shots after that kind of performance. Wolak might also have problems getting the young Chavez Jr. in the ring, even though Chavez Jr. is a much bigger fighter at 6’0″ compared to the 5’8″ Wolak. Chavez Jr. is also the stronger fighter.

However, he’s not that much stronger and Wolak throws a lot more punches than Chavez. He could end up outworking Chavez Jr. and taking his title if given the opportunity. I doubt Chavez’s promoter will allow his mini-cash cow to fight Wolak, despite the two sharing the same promoter. Wolak could wreck the Chavez Jr. money-making machine by marring his perfect record with his first loss.
