Why doesn’t Pacquiao fight Saul Alvarez?

Image: Why doesn't Pacquiao fight Saul Alvarez?By Chris Williams: Photo credit Naoki Fakuda – Manny Pacquiao is about to fight a guy that’s about to turn 40 in his fight against Shane Mosley on May 7th in Las Vegas. Almost the entire civilized world is already aware of the fact that Mosley is as shot as they come, and is basically being picked just because of his name value and not because he earned a shot against Pacquiao. Mosley is being brought in to pump up the pay-per-view numbers because he’s recognizable to clueless boxing fans with only a passing knowledge of the sport.

This is playing to the lowest common denominator to be sure. But why doesn’t Pacquiao face the newly crowned WBC junior middleweight champion Saul Alvarez? Answer me that. Why is Antonio Margarito, a fighter as slow as they come, okay for Pacquiao to fight against but not Alvarez, a real junior middleweight. Is Pacquiao or his promoter Bob Arum afraid of putting Pacquiao in with the powerful Alvarez? I think it may be the case.

I was very impressed with Alvarez last weekend in watching his batter British fighter Matthew Hatton in a one-sided 12 round decision. Alvarez looked like a monster at junior middleweight, and the only reason he didn’t destroy Hatton is because of how good Hatton’s chin is. Alvarez landed some shots in that fight that would have decapitated a fighter with a weaker chin. This what I can see Alvarez doing to Pacquiao if they let Manny fight him. They won’t, of course, because Alvarez is fighting well, not struggling and he isn’t old.
