UK Boxing Weekly: Hatton-Alvarez, Burns-Laryea, DeGale-Groves, More!

By Adam Fillingham: Firstly I would like to say commiserations to Matthew Hatton for his unfortunate loss at the hands of Mexican Saul Alvarez. It was a spirited effort but he was no match for the young warrior. I hope that Hatton can now move on and try to win domestic honours to earn another title shot before his age becomes a factor.

This Saturday night Sky Sports and Frank Warren bring us Scotland newest world champion “Rickster” Ricky Burns. Burns currently holds the WBO Super Featherweight world title and will be defending the belt against Paul Appleby’s conqueror and No.11 ranked Joseph Laryea. As did Ricky’s last fight this defence will also take place in Glasgow.

This is not a surprising opponent. After Layrea made mince meet of Scotland’s number two Appleby, I could have guessed Burns would want revenge. So this fight should be big for Scottish, or even British fans, but around the world, I highly doubt this will give Burns much exposure.

The fight should be a comfortable victory for the Scotsman. Laryea I believe either had a good night, or caught Appleby on a bad one as I don’t think a rematch would pan out the same way. But saying that, Burns only seems to turn up as good as the fighter that is put in front of him. He showed this in his lacklustre first defence against Andreas Evensen.

If I was to hazarded a prediction I would say a wide 12 round unanimous decision for Burns. Hopefully after this fight Burns will be set up with bigger fights like TAKASHI UCHIYAMA (WBA), MZONKE FANA (IBF), TAKAHIRO AOH (WBC), or the number 1 contender Terdsak Jandaeng

Also fighting on the same card is the man of the moment James Degale who is still waiting on British No.1 contender George Groves and is taking a fight with a (as of time of writing) unknown opponent. Degale looks to have a bright future ahead of him and a great fight with George Groves in the near future, so I hope that he doesn’t underestimate what ever journeyman is pulled into this fight.

Quick news

David Haye and the Klitschko brothers have finally agreed a deal with a fight at either the end of June or early July. With past politics I would wait until the bell rings before settling on this fight happening.

For all British boxing fans a Haye – Klitschko showdown is a sigh of relief. But not for one man; Derek Chisora. Once again Wladimir Klitschko has pulled out of the fight with the British champion but that leaves a Chisora – Tyson Fury match up.

The brave “Magic” Matthew Hatton even in defeat has been given big options for the future including Paulie Malignaggi and the Andre Berto – Victor Ortiz winner.

The former IBO Super middleweight world champion Adrian Dodson will be making a come back from retirement, when he enters Prizefighter super middleweights 2. The Islington fighter has not fought since 2003 and at 41 years old it shall be interesting to see how much he has left.

WBA light welterweight champion Amir “king” Khan has confirmed he will not fight good friend and fellow stable mate Manny Pacquiao. Amir told the Daily star “I will never fight Manny. He has one or two fights left in him, but I will not be one of them”
