Martinez vs. Dzinziruk on Saturday, 3/12

By Jason Kim: On Saturday night former WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (46-2-2, 25 KO’s) battles unbeaten Ukrainian Sergiy Dzinziruk (37-0, 23 KO’s) for the vacant WBC Diamond middleweight title at the Foxwoods Resort Casino, in Mashantucket, Connecticut. Martinez expects to win and wants to fight Manny Pacquiao of Floyd Mayweather Jr. next. However, Martinez is a realist and understands full well that neither Mayweather or Pacquiao have any interest in fighting him any time soon.

Martinez would do well to look bad in the Dzinziruk fight because that might improve his chances of getting a fight – at least with Pacquiao. However, Dzinziruk is too good of a fighter for Martinez to look bad against because Martinez is going to have his hands full against Dzinziruk even fighting all out.

Dzinziruk has the best jab in the junior middleweight division and has superb boxing skills. He’s easily the best boxer that Martinez will have ever fought before. The question is whether Martinez can get to Dzinziruk with his power shots to try and take him out the way that Martinez did Paul Williams when he took him out in the 2nd round last year.

Martinez should forget about Mayweather or Pacquiao because those fights aren’t going to happen. Martinez will be lucky if he can get someone like Miguel Cotto to fight him. I don’t see that happening because Bob Arum won’t want to sacrifice Cotto against a tough and powerful fighter like Martinez. The best that Martinez can hope for is a fight against someone like Matthew Macklin, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. or David Lemieux.
