Image: Maidana-Morales: Marcos looking to slaughter Erik on April 9thBy Dan Ambrose: Former three time world champion Erik Morales (51-6, 35 KO’s) has picked the wrong fighter to try and resurrect his career against with the hard hitting light welterweight contender Marcos Maidana (29-2, 27 KO’s). On April 9th, Morales will come into the ring a heavy underdog in his fight at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Morales doesn’t have the power at light welterweight and seems to be in the wrong weight class against the wrong fighter.

Morales has been carrying around loose flab around his midsection in his last three fights, no doubt a product of his time away from boxing during his three-year retirement. It’s great that Morales was able to take off much of the blubber that he put on during the three years out of the sport. However, Morales doesn’t look right at light welterweight. His power is completely gone, as well as his hand speed. His defense, never good to begin with, has been nonexistent in his last three fights. That’s troubling because he won’t last long with a powerful puncher like Maidana slugging him at will.

Morales is going to probably get into a brief war with Maidana on April 9th and quickly get torn apart within three or four rounds. If you have nothing to keep Maidana off of you or if you don’t run for the hills the way that WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan did in his fight against Maidana, you’re going to get run over by a steamroller. Morales won’t get far in this fight because he doesn’t have the tools to beat a young slugger like Maidana. It’s going to be short, one-sided and brutal with Maidana beating up and finishing off Morales in the first few rounds.
