Image: Dzinziruk-Martinez: Look for Sergio to get a boxing lesson on SaturdayBy Dan Ambrose: This is supposed to be a fight that former WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (46-2-2, 25 KO’s) is supposed to win without too many problems in his bout against WBO junior middleweight champion Serguy Dzinziruk (37-0, 23 KO’s) at the Foxwoods Resort Casino, in Mashantucket, Connecticut. But I think this fight is going to show that Martinez doesn’t have the skills to contend with a fighter with a world class jab and movement that is just as good if not better than Martinez.

In past fights, Martinez, 36, was able to take advantage of his slower, less skilled opponents due to his ability to move and because of his southpaw stance. However, on Saturday night, Martinez is going to be facing Dzinziruk, who is also a southpaw with excellent ability to move around the ring and with a much better jab. Dzinziruk doesn’t just stand in front of his opponents like Paul Williams and Kelly Pavlik, two fighters that Martinez did really well against.

Dzinziruk will keep the fight on the outside like Kermit Cintron did in his fight with Martinez in February 2009, and give Martinez all kinds of problems. Martinez had to struggle to get a 12 round draw with Cintron, and that’s a good indication that Martinez will struggle just as badly against Dzinziruk because he won’t be standing in front of Martinez and he won’t be looking to slug it out the way that Williams and Pavlik foolishly did in their losses to Martinez. Dzinziruk, a former Olympic for Ukraine in the 1996 Olympics, has got superb boxing skills and doesn’t make the same kinds of mistakes that less skilled fighters often do. Martinez will have to out-box Dzinziruk if he wants to pick up the win. That’s not going to be easy because Dzinziruk is a master at boxing and he moves a lot better around the ring compared to Martinez.
