Dimitrenko vs. Sosnowski on March 26th

By Jim Dower: EBU heavyweight champion Alexander Dimitrenko (30-1, 20 KO’s) will be defending his European Boxing Union title against Polish heavyweight Albert Sosnowski (46-3-1, 28 KO’s) on March 26th in Frankfurt, Germany. The fighters were set to fight in December but Dimitrenko fainted in the dressing room before the fight, causing the fight to be called off. Both Dimitrenko and Sosnowski are fringe contenders.

Sosnowski was beaten previously by WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko in a failed attempt to capture the title in May 2010. Vitali took a lot of heat for fighting Sosnowski because before that fight, Sosnowski had never had never beaten a top tier fighter and was ranked at number #12. Vitali toyed with Sosnowski for nine rounds and then took him out in the 10th when Vitali suddenly turned up the heat on the Polish heavyweight.

Sosnowski rebounded from the defeat, beating Paul Butlin by a 1st round TKO in September. Dimitrenko’s career has been pretty much the same as Sosnowski’s, with all of his wins coming against 2nd tier heavyweights. The one time Dimitrenko took on a 1st tier fighter, he was dominated by Eddie Chambers and beaten by a 12 round decision in 2009. Dimitrenko has fought only once since then, beating Yaroslav Zavorotnyi by a 5th round TKO last year in July.

The Dimitrenko-Sosnowski fight will produce a winner that could be in the run of things for a title shot at some point in the future. It’s sad to think of either of these guys getting a title shot, but the Klitschkos will likely be up for a bout against one of them because a fight against either of them would sell in Germany because they’re well known there.
