Bute to roll over Magee this Saturday night on Showtime

By Jason Kim: What’s become a mere formality for IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute (27-0, 22 KO’s), he’ll be stomping yet another over-matched opponent in his next defense this Saturday night against Brian Magee (34-3-1, 24 KO’s) at the Bell Centre, Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Bute, 31, is one of the best fighters in the super middleweight division if not the very best.

Magee isn’t nearly as good, and has faced only one fighter that you could really consider a quality opponent during his 12 year career in Carl Froch, and Magee lost that fight by an 11th round TKO in 2006. The rest of the guys Magee has fought have been largely little known 2nd and 3rd tier guys that Magee has done a great job against and built up a nice impressive record but with little substance.

The sanctioning bodies have been kind enough to give Magee a #5 ranking in the IBF, high enough to get Bute’s attention. From what I’ve seen of Magee, he looks like a decent 2nd tier guy, but not someone that I feel deserves to be in with a champion like Bute. Hopefully, this fight will go a few rounds and not end up like Bute’s mismatches against Fulgencio Zuniga, Librado Andrade rematch and Edison Miranda.

If Bute wins this fight there is the potential that he could be facing Mikkel Kessler later this year as well as the winner of the Super Six tournament. I can’t wait for that to happen because I can only imagine who will be the next challenger for Bute to destroy. While I like to see him take on a guy like Daniel Jacobs for one of his title defenses instead of the over-matched guys he’s been facing, I don’t think Bute will break from his habit of taking on more obscure guys who have little to no chance against him.
