Breidis Prescott vs. Bayan Jargal on 4/22

By William Mackay: Former Amir Khan conqueror Breidis Prescott (23-2, 19 KO’s) will be back in action on April 22nd against Mongolian Bayan Jargal (15-1-3, 10 KO’s) in a scheduled 10 round bout on ESPN at the Mohegan Sun Casino, in Connecticut.

Prescott, ranked #11 by the WBA, is slowly working his way up the rankings to a hoped for title shot in the near future. In 2008, Prescott destroyed Khan in one round after knocking him down twice with a series of left hooks.

Khan hasn’t shown any interest in fighting Prescott since and the losses by Prescott to Miguel Vazquez and Kevin Mitchell have given Khan the perfect excuse for not trying to avenge his loss. To be sure, there is no shame in losing to fighters like Vazquez or Mitchell.

Vazquez is the current IBF lightweight champion and looking almost unbeatable at this time. Mitchell simply hit and ran all night long against Prescott, giving him few opportunities to land his shots.

However, the lopsided scores in the Mitchell-Prescott fight don’t reflect the actual fight that took place because it was a tough fight to score. Prescott landed the much harder shots, while Mitchell landed more pitty-pat shots.

The fight was held in the UK and the judges scored rounds in Mitchell’s favor based on his higher punch connect rate, even though his shots much weaker than Prescott’s.
Since the loss to Mitchell, Prescott has beaten Jason Davis and Harrison Cuello. Prescott needs to beat Jargal for him to be taken seriously for a title shot in the future. A loss here will really hurt Prescott’s chances of a future shot.
