Andy Lee vs. Craig McEwan on Saturday

By Eric Thomas: This Saturday night Andy Lee (24-1, 18 KO’s) fights unbeaten Craig McEwan (19-0, 10 KO’s) in a 10 round battle on the undercard of the Sergio Martinez vs. Sergiy Dzinziruk bout at the Foxwoods Resort Casino, Mashantucket, Connecticut. Lee, 26, needs the win to keep in the running for an eventual shot against one of the middleweight champs. Lee is currently ranked #5 WBA and #14 WBC.

However, he doesn’t appear to be good enough to beat quality fighters like Gennady Golovkin or Felix Sturm. Lee’s best bet is to try and get a shot against someone like Sebastian Zbik or Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Those two are fighters that Lee would have a good chance of beating if his shaky chin can hold up under fire.

Lee has the power and the boxing ability to beat McEwan on Saturday. Lee is the better puncher and he’s got someone that will be there for him to hit. McEwan fights with his hands down and tends to try and get away from shots by bending away rather than picking them off with his gloves. Lee would do well to try and focus on landing head shots. Lee needs to go after McEwan early, because Lee’s stamina isn’t good and he could have problems if the fight goes past six.

McEwan struggled to beat Danny Perez in his last fight last July, winning by a close 10 round decision after getting staggered. The reason why McEwan was hurt because he had his guard down by his sides. Lee needs to take advantage of McEwan’s lack of defensive skills by really coming after him this Saturday.
