By Jim Dower: 45-year-old Bert “Smokin” Cooper (38-22, 31 KO’s) will be taking on 41-year-old Cedric Boswell (33-1, 26 KO’s) in a scheduled 10 round bout at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, Hollywood, Florida.

This is a toss-up fight because although Boswell has the much more impressive record and has been a lot more active recently, he hasn’t faced anyone of real quality during his 17-year- career other than fringe contender Jameel McCline.

Boswell was stopped by McCline in the 10th round back in 2003. He’s spent the remainder of his career facing B level heavyweights and somehow never getting beyond this level. He has a great looking record, though. In contrast, Cooper has been in with the best during his 27-year pro career, losing to guys like George Foreman, Carl Williams, Jeremy Williams, Ray Mercer, Riddick Bowe, Evander Holyfield, Michael Moorer, Mike Weaver, Corrie Sanders, Larry Donald, Joe Mesi, Jeremy Williams, Derrick Jefferson and Fres Oquendo.

Cooper has been the opposite of Boswell in that he’s taken on the very best fighters during his career. Unfortunately, Cooper has lost most of the time when he’s stepped it up but because of his power and exciting fighting style, he’s always made it interesting while it’s lasted. This is why used to be so in demand. However, he’s getting way up there in age and it’s unclear whether he has enough left to beat a B level heavyweight like Boswell.

It should be interesting because Boswell doesn’t have much power and likes to box from the outside. If Cooper has anything left, he’s going to take Boswell out of his comfort zone and make him taste some real power.
