Tyson Fury looks like he has potential

by Alex Hedges: This past weekend saw British heavyweight prospect Tyson Fury win his 14th straight fight with a crushing 5th round KO of unbeaten Brazillian Marcelo Luiz Nascimento. Fury landed a vicious overhand right, that crashed into the temple of Nascimento, sending him to the canvas where he remained prone for several minutes.

The nature of the KO wasn’t the only impressive aspect of Fury’s performance though, he once again showed a pretty good jab, surprising speed for such a huge man, and the ability to fight in different way, mixing it up at times, with effective bodywork, and controlling the fight behind his jab at other times. Fury often gets put down by people, saying things like he is a disgrace to the name Tyson, but I think for such a young man, he has several good aspects, not least his willingness to fight anyone he can get in the ring with.

At the age of 22, Tyson Fury is probably at least 6 years and 15 fights away from reaching his prime, and if he continues to learn, and perhaps more importantly, begins to take his conditioning more seriously, I could see the big man doing well in the future.

As boxing fans, we tend to want everything right now, but I say sit back, enjoy Tyson Fury as he comes through the ranks, and lets see where he ends up.

On another note, this past weekend, former US Olympian Deontay Wilder had his 15th fight, and 15th straight Ko. However, as usual his opponent was ridiculously over-matched, having lost his previous 5 fights in a row (at 175lbs no less). Boxrec have Wilder ranked 72 places below Tyson Fury in the rankings, and with good reason. Wilder cannot be taken seriously until he is put in with at least a journeyman heavyweight fighter, I wouldn’t even mind seeing him fight John McDermott, who gave Fury a very tough fight before being stopped in the rematch, and prevailed by 1st round Ko against touted heavyweight Larry Olubamwimo at the weekend.
