Sergio Mora vs. Bryan Vera this Friday

By Jim Dower: This Friday night, former World Boxing Council (WBC) junior middleweight champion Sergio Mora (22-1-2, 6 KO’s) takes on an important opponent in the hard hitting Bryan Vera (17-5, 11 KO’s) in a 10 round bout on ESPN Friday Night Fights at the Convention Center, in Fort Worth, Texas.

Mora, 30, is seeing action for the first time since fighting to a controversial 12 round draw with Shane Mosley last year in September. Mora deserved to get the win in that fight, but he didn’t help himself by moving too much.

By the time he slowed down and started to really pound Mosley, it was far too late to make up for some of the close rounds. Mora needs to punch more in this fight, move less and look to impress so that he can make a case for himself that he deserves a title shot. He’s ranked number #WBC and needs to get a couple more good wins before he can be seriously considered as an opponent for one of the champions.

However, because of his tendency to move a lot, Mora is going to be someone that the junior middleweight champions stay away from. Mora might have the talent to beat most if not all of the current champions, but he needs to get busy so he can prove it.

Vera has really excellent power with his right hand, but he doesn’t do well against boxers. If Mora stands in front of Vera, this could make things a lot easier for Vera. It’s been ages since Vera got a good win under his belt. He defeated Andy Lee by an 7th round TKO in 2008, but he’s done little since then. Vera has lost four out of his last five fights.
