By Chris Williams: It’s no surprise that Manny Pacquiao (52-3-2, 38 KO’s) will not be choosing to defend his recently won World Boxing Council junior middleweight title and will instead be reportedly vacating the belt after having beaten fellow Top Rank stable fighter Antonio Margarito for the strap in November of last year to capture the vacant title.

Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum doesn’t want Pacquiao fighting the bigger junior middleweights because of the damage that he took in the Margarito fight, even though Margarito is hardly what you would call a junior middleweight. He’s fought pretty much his entire career at junior middleweight with the exception of a couple of fights.

Arum might as well have said that Pacquiao can’t fight welterweights anymore as well, because that’s what Margarito has been during his career. He did weigh more than Pacquiao during the fight, but the weight didn’t help him because his hand speed and foot movement were too poor for him to land with any consistency.

Shortly before Pacquiao fought for the title, the WBC suddenly pushed Margarito to the number #1 spot, despite the fact that he had fought only once at that weight in the past six years he defeated fringe contender Roberto Garcia in May of 2010. It seemed very convenient that the WBC then pushed Margarito to number #1, and thus putting him in the position to fight fellow Top Rank stable fighter Pacquiao for the vacant title. It was interesting to see Margarito ranked over top junior middleweights like Vanes Martirosyan, Alfredo Angulo and Kermit Cintron shortly before the Pacquiao fight took place.

Pacquiao is facing 39-year-old Shane Mosley on May 7th at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Mosley looks totally shot and went life and death with Sergio Mora in his last fight in September last year, and had to settle for a gift draw. This is an easy fight for Pacquiao and another case of good match-making in picking out the faded Mosley to fight. Boxing fans will be really impressed with Pacquiao in this fight.
