Speaking with Hackney Gazette, Olubamiwo said “Tyson Fury is someone who is definitely on my radar. I’m ranked number one challenger for his English title. He took a lot of stick after that first [John] McDermott fight, but in the second bout he showed a lot of heart and I admire him for doing that and I admire his ambition. He wants to win titles at a young age.”

Olubamiwo, 32, faces John McDermott (25-7, 16 KO’s) this Saturday night in a scheduled 10 round bout at the York Hall, in Bethnal Green, in London. This is going to be a great chance for Olubamiwo to try and show what he can do against a fighter that Fury struggled to beat two times in the past, and who also gave Danny Williams fits in two bouts. McDermott lost all four of those bouts, but they were all close at one point or another. Fury stopped McDermott in their second fight last year in June, taking McDermott out with a flurry of punches in the 9th round. McDermott hasn’t fought since that time.

The 6’4″ 260+ Olubamiwo has recorded five 1st round and two 2nd round knockouts in the nine knockouts that he has on his record. He can clearly punches. However, Olubamiwo also can be out-boxed, because he’s not very fast. A fight between Fury and Olubamiwo would be a big test for Fury to see if he’s as good as some people think he is. If Olubamiwo lands cleanly, he would likely knock Fury out. This is why it’s unlikely Fury’s management would be willing to put him in with a big puncher like Olubamiwo
