Martinez-Dzinziruk: Sergiy doesn’t have the power to trade in this fight

By Jason Kim: If you look at some of the past fights of WBO junior middleweight champion Sergiy Dzinziruk (37-0, 23 KO’s), you’ll notice he likes to box for awhile and then try to exchange with some big power shots to test the waters to see if he can take out his opponents. This may have worked for him without fail in the past against the likes of Daniel Dawson, Daniel Santos and Lukas Konecny, to name just a few of his former opponents, but it won’t be successful for him against former WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (46-2-2, 25 KO’s) in their fight on March 12th at the Foxwoods Resort & Casino, in Mashantucket, Connecticut.

If the 34-year-old Dzinziruk tries to trade with Martinez, he’s likely to run into something really big and get knocked out. Martinez is punching a lot harder now than he ever was in the past since moving up in weight to middleweight. Martinez seems a lot stronger at this weight and is able to sit down on his shots a lot better than he ever did before.

Part of the reason why Martinez is punching so much harder is that he’s not moving nearly as much as he used to. Part of that could be his advancing age, as he’s in his mid-30s now, but the other part is that he realizes that he’s got good power. Martinez beat up WBC/WBO middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik last year and then followed it up with a one-punch knockout of the usually sturdy chinned Paul Williams in his next fight in November 2010.
