Maidana says he hasn’t been approached by Alexander for a fight

By Eric Thomas: Marcos Maidana (29-2, 27 KO’s) says that he hasn’t yet been given an offer to fight former WBC light welterweight champion Devon Alexander (21-1, 13 KO’s). There had been rumors that Alexander and Maidana were close to having a fight put together for July 30th. However, Maidana dismissed those rumors, saying “Not true,” in his twitter account. “None of that as of now. Didn’t receive any offers at all.” Maidana doesn’t think Alexander will want to fight him, perhaps because of how dangerous a puncher Maidana is.

To be sure, it would be a really risky fight for Alexander after the way he performed in his 10 round technical decision loss to WBO light welterweight champion Timothy Bradley last weekend. Alexander looked timid, like he didn’t want to mix it up with Bradley. When Bradley started to really turn up the heat in the 2nd half of the fight, Alexander backed away constantly and was only able to throw an occasional punch.

Bradley is a good pressure fighter, but he’s not as good as Maidana in that regard and he doesn’t punch nearly as hard either. Alexander would have a tough time on his hands against a slugger like Maidana. Alexander and his management need to think hard before they agree to take a on fighter like Maidana, because Alexander has been exposed in his last two fights against Andry Kotelnik and Bradley, and if he loses to Maidana, Alexander would find himself way back in the light welterweight pack. It would take Alexander ages to work his way back if he gets beaten by Maidana and he might never get back to the top unless he starts to improve.

HBO may or may not want to put Alexander with Maidana. It was thought that the loser of the Alexander-Bradley fight would then face Maidana, but now it’s not so certain because of how boring Alexander looked. He’s looked unwatchable in his last two fights. HBO might want to look for someone a tad more exciting to put in with Maidana instead of Alexander if they don’t want to put boxing fans asleep.
