Johnson-Froch: If Carl tries to slug with Glen, he’s going to lose

By Scott Gilfoid: WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch (27-1, 20 Ko’s) prides himself on his ability to go out and blast apart his opponents to get his wins. Nothing comes easy for Froch, but he wins most of the time regardless of his measures. His slugging doesn’t always work out for him, unfortunately. He’s already got one loss in the Super Six tournament to Mikkel Kessler and he probably should have another against the talented Andre Dirrell, who Froch beat by a controversial 12 round split decision in October 2009.

Froch now faces Glen Johnson (51-14-2, 35 KO’s) on May 21st at a still to be determined venue. Johnson is a fighter that specializes in slugging. It;s fair to say that Johnson is an even better slugger than Froch. He’s certainly bigger and has faced better overall opposition that Froch during his long 18-year pro career. Johnson does especially well when facing opponents that either stand perfectly still in front of him so that he can land his huge shots or ones that come straight at him looking to slug.

I wish I could say that Froch will be smart enough to realize that he’s facing the superior slugger of the two and will back down and look to box. However, Froch is stubborn and will likely stay the course and go down with the ship, trying to fruitlessly slug until the very moment he’s knocked into oblivion by Johnson. It’s going to be sad to see Froch getting drummed out of the Super Six tournament but that’s what happens when you have too much pride.
