Fury vs. Nascimento on Saturday, 2/19

By Scott Gilfoid: Undefeated Tyson Fury (13-0, 9 KO’s) has finally found a beatable opponent for this Saturday’s date on February 19th at the Wembley Arena, in Wembley, London. It took Fury’s managment ages to find someone that fit his qualifications. Fury, 22, will be facing unbeaten Brazilian Marcelo Luiz Nascimento (13-0, 11 KO’s), who has a very similar record as the 6’9″ Fury. Nascimento is quite tall at 6’5″ 228 lbs, but painfully slow and doesn’t seem to know how to jab, defend or throw a right hand. He looks basically like someone that climbed into the ring from the crowd.

Fury had been looking to facing 42-year-old Francois Botha, but the British Boxing Board of Control failed to sanction that fight. Fury next called out 39-year-old Audley Harrison with no luck. Nascimento is perhaps along the same lines as those guys in terms of fighting ability. In the couple of fights I’ve seen of him, Nascimento showed an inability to throw a jab or a right hand with any speed. He’s very slow, but his lack of technical skills makes him even worse.

Nascimento does have a good left hook and if he hits Fury with it, I wouldn’t doubt he’ll put Fury down on the canvas. But Fury is a lot better fighter than this guy. I’m just wondering how Fury’s management found Nascimento.

They must have done some real searching to find some unknown guy with a fluff record in Brazil for Fury to beat on Saturday. All I can say is if Fury can’t beat this guy, he needs to retire and quick. Even Steward won’t be able to make enough changes to Fury’s style to get him to beat a halfway decent fighter if he’s not even good enough to beat Nascimento. I see this as a make or break fight for Fury. If he loses, he’s going to lose a lot of respect from fans – or at least the ones that do still respect him.
