By Sean McDaniel: Should unbeaten British heavyweight champion Dereck Chisora (14-0, 9 KO’s) fail to beat IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko in his attempt to capture his two titles on April 30th, Chisora will have the unpleasant task of having to defend his BBBofC British heavyweight title against unbeaten British heavyweight contender Tyson Fury (13-0, 9 KO’s) after the British Boxing Board of Control made the 22-year-old Fury the mandatory challenger to Chisora’s title.
Chisora, 27, captured the British title last year in May, stopping Danny Williams in the 2nd round with a furious blitz that left Williams on the canvas. Chisora has since defended the British title once, defeating Sam Sexton by a 9th round TKO in September 2010 in a fight that was close for the first six rounds but then turned in Chisora’s direction beginning in the 7th, when he started to get to a weary Sexton with hard combinations on the inside.
Fury is still in the developmental stage in his career. He recently signed on with legendary trainer Emanuel Steward, who is trying to make changes to Fury’s mostly crude style of fighting to teach him how to use 6’9” size to work for him. It’s unclear whether Steward will want Fury to take on Chisora at this point in his career, especially if Chisora gives Wladimir trouble on April 30th.
If Chisora gets blown out in one or two rounds by Wladimir, which is a definite possibility given the size and talent gap between the two fighters, Steward might give Fury the okay to take on Chisora and see how Fury handles the much shorter 6’1” Chisora. It would be a risky test for Fury, because they’ve been looking to match Fury up against older fighters as of recent times. Chisora is a lot better than the guys that they’ve been trying to put Fury in with.
