Foreman-Wolak: Yuri looking to get back in the thick of things

By Michael Lieberman: Former WBA junior middleweight champion Yuri Foreman (28-1, 8 KO’s) fights for the first time after having major surgery on his right knee when he takes on Pawel Wolak (28-1, 18 KO’s) on March 12th at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Foreman, 30, will be fighting on the same card as his recent conqueror Miguel Cotto, who stopped Foreman in the 9th round last June at the Yankee Stadium, in New York.

Foreman was giving Cotto all he could handle for seven rounds until Foreman’s right knee gave out on him in the 7th. This allowed Cotto to take charge of the fight and take the badly limping Foreman out in the 9th. Now after getting his right leg repaired, Foreman is getting back in the ring to take on one of the best fighters in the junior middleweight division in Wolak.

This isn’t what you would call the normal tune-up fight. Foreman has decided to forgo a tune-up and just go straight back against the best fighters in the division to try and get a quick title shot. By taking on a quality fighter on the Cotto vs. Ricardo Mayorga card on March 12th, this will enable Foreman to make a case for himself to get a shot against one of the champions, as his fight with Wolak will make it to television.

This could also backfire on Foreman if he’s not able to get around the ring with the same speed he once did. Anytime you have major surgery on your leg like Foreman had, your leg is never going to be the same again. The strength and flexibility won’t be the same. This is a big risk for Foreman to get back in the ring so soon after major surgery, but he believes he can beat Wolak and get another crack at the title.
