Image: DeGale says he's open to fighting Froch after the Super Six tourney endsBy Scott Gilfoid: Unbeaten British super middleweight James DeGale (9-0, 7 KO’s) is open to fighting WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch (27-1, 20 KO’s) for his title in the near future. DeGale must see a weakness in Froch for him to want to face him this early after only nine fightsl.

In an article at thesun.co.uk, DeGale said “Obviously I’d say I’m gong to win if I fight Carl. You can never know. In 18 months time, it could happen. When the Super Six is done, it would be a great, great fight for the British public. With the way I’m going, and if Carl wins the Super Six, it would be an excellent fight.”

One problem, though. Froch isn’t likely going to win the Super Six tournament, because there’s one fighter in the tournament – Andre Ward – who promises to be a very tough fight for Froch. My guess is Froch is going to get spanked by Ward in the worst way. At this point, I would give Froch very little chance of beating Ward. Froch also might not make it past his next opponent 42-year-old Glen Johnson in May. That’s another fighter that Froch could wind up suffering a loss to. DeGale, whether he likes or not, might have Froch on his hands a little earlier than 18 months, beaten and badly in need of a win to boost his spirits.

At that point, DeGale could be the one to help Froch by giving him and fight but then perhaps putting him out his misery by giving him a royal pounding. But as long as the British public gets to drink in the fight, it’s all good. If I was DeGale, I wouldn’t hesitate to take the Froch fight whether he comes in licking his wounds from the Super Six tournament or not. His scalp will be a good one to add to DeGale’s growing collection.
