DeGale doesn’t believe Groves fight will happen

By Sean McDaniel: British super middleweight champion James DeGale (9-0, 7 KO’s) is skeptical about getting a fight against unbeaten Commonwealth champion George Groves (11-0, 9 KO’s). Their fight has gone to purse bids. DeGale is hoping the fight can take place in April if everything goes alright, but he’s doubtful, because he thinks that Groves will try and weasel out of the fight somehow.

Speaking to thesun.co.uk, DeGale said “I don’t have a clue what Hayemaker want, they just strike me as a bunch of confused people. But I think it’s more because they don’t really want the fight and they’re looking for any excuse. He’s my mandatory challenger so I’m waiting for him if anything. At this rate, we’re going to have to get someone else lined up because I’m boxing soon regardless. It’s very,. very confusing because everyone wants to see us in the ring. All the fight fans want to see it, so I just want to get it on and knock him out. he’s very ugly and he’s going to get found out very soon”

DeGale might want to look for an alternative bout, because Groves and his management seem to be apprehensive about taking this fight with DeGale. You can’t blame Groves if he doesn’t want to fight DeGale, because a loss right now, especially a brutal one, would have a serious impact on Groves’ career. He already barely escaped his last fight against Kenny Anderson after getting hurt early and knocked down. Groves needs a lot more time before he’s put in with a skilled fighter like DeGale.

DeGale has been rumored to be facing Edison Miranda and WBA super middleweight champion Dimitri Sartison in 2011. It seems to me that those are much better fights than wasting time on a domestic level fighter like Groves, who will likely never reach the status of world class.
