Alexander vs. Bradley: Two of the weakest punchers in memory

By Scott Gilfoid: Last Saturday night’s fight between WBC light welterweight champion Devon Alexander (21-1, 13 KO’s) and WBO light welterweight champ Timothy Bradley (27-0, 11 KO’s has got to be one of the poorest fights I can remember seeing between two champions in a unification bout. Both of those guys were like a couple of feather-fisted amateurs in there just lobbing weak shots at each other all night. I honestly don’t know what I ever saw in Bradley.

Before this fight, I thought the guy was good, at least good enough to beat WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan. I take that back now that I’ve seen Bradley against Alexander. God, the guy looked horrible. No power, no speed, just clinching all the time and ramming Alexander like a tug boat hitting a big pier. It was bad boxing and painful to watch. But besides the clinching and lack of action, the weak punching I saw in that fight was pathetic. Those guys can’t punch at all. I now have new respect for both Khan and Marcos Maidana. Those guys look so much better than Bradley and Alexander in terms of power and technique.

I hope HBO isn’t heavily invested in Bradley and Alexander because they need to cut their losses and move on. I haven’t seen exciting fight yet from either of those guys, but they’re fight last Saturday was a new low. It was just terrible to watch. I don’t care if Bradley is the WBC/WBO champion now, he won’t hold onto it for long. He’ll lose as soon as he fights Khan or Maidana.
