Wladimir says Haye can sidestep Chagaev and still fight him on July 2nd

By William Mackay: While WBA heavyweight champion David Haye seems to be incredibly worried about having to make a defense of his World Boxing Association title against former WBA champion Ruslan Chagaev, IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko sees no problems for Haye paying Chagaev a step aside fee so that Haye can fight him on July 2nd. Haye isn’t happy that Wladimir has decided to fight Dereck Chisora on April 30th for a couple of reasons.

One of them being that by Wladimir facing Chisora, it would mean that Haye will have to take on the still dangerous Chagaev. However, there may be a way out for Haye if he decides to speak to Chagaev to see if he’s willing to accept step aside money.

Speaking to espn.com, Wladimir said “I don’t take David Haye as a super special fight. I don’t need half a year to prepare for this fight. I’m always in shape anyway. Me fighting Chisora first is a good promotion for the fight with David Haye becaue the guy is also British and very loud. It’s perfect to help promote the big fight. He [Haye] could give Chagaev step aside money…I would fight him July 2nd and we would work on the contract, but I would fight Chisora first and make sure I fight.”

Above all, Wladimir wants to be able to take the Chisora fight just in case Haye dashes of or backs out like he’s done in the past with the Klitschko brothers. Wladimir was supposed to fight Haye in 2009, but he backed out with a back injury just two weeks before their fight on June 20th 2009. And when Haye was negotiating with Vitali Klitschko in the past, Haye bailed out without a word during negotiations and signed to fight WBA paper champion Nikolay Valuev. Is it any wonder then that Wladimir doesn’t trust Haye?

But, as far as the July 2nd fight goes, Haye could easily pay Chagaev step aside money if he’s worried about having to take that fight and possibly get knocked out. Chagaev would be the best heavyweight that Haye will have fought since moving up to the heavyweight division in 2008, and at 32, Chagaev would be the youngest as well. Haye has been fighting 38 and 39-year-old heavyweights in the past couple of years. Chagaev would be like a spring chicken in comparison to the old dinosaurs that Haye has been fighting.
