WBC to force Hopkins-Pascal rematch – Let’s hope Hopkins can stay on his feet this time

By Dan Ambrose: The World Boxing Council has ordered an immediate rematch between WBC light heavyweight champion Jean Pascal and soon to be 46-year-old Bernard Hopkins and will insist on this fight going ahead next with the winner facing Chad Dawson next. I really don’t see the point in the rematch going ahead right away. Hopkins blew his chance at making a case that he should have defeated Pascal in their fight in December 2010 by getting dropped twice.

I’m not sure if Hopkins is aware of this or not, but that’s not how you beat a champion. You don’t get knocked down by a champion, fighting in his home town, and start moaning about having won the fight afterwards. I think the WBC is wasting our time by forcing the rematch. I’m cool with Hopkins and Pascal fighting again, but only after Pascal fights his rematch against Dawson.

That’s a fight that I feel Dawson deserves more because he has a rematch clause in his contract with Pascal and both fighters were allowed interim fights. Pascal used his for the Hopkins bout, while Dawson elected not to fight. But now that the WBC is forcing the Hopkins vs. Pascal rematch, Dawson is forced to wait longer for his well deserved rematch with Pascal.

I don’t like the idea of Dawson waiting and I hate the idea of a more popular fighter like Hopkins, who got dropped twice, getting rewarded with an immediate rematch. I don’t even think Hopkins will fight Dawson if Hopkins is able to beat Pascal. We would then have Dawson facing someone for the vacant WBC title after Hopkins finally gives it up in the future after fighting other people.
