Tomasz Adamek doesn’t need Samuel Peter to get Wladimir fight

By Dan Ambrose: There’s talk about the International Boxing Federation (IBF) ordering purse bids on January 20th for a final eliminator bout between Tomasz Adamek (43-1, 28 KO’s) and former WBC heavyweight champion Samuel Peter (34-4, 27 KO’s).

The winner of this bout, which would occur on April 16th at the Spodek, Katowice, Poland, would then be set to face IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko at some point in the future. This may seem obvious but why would Adamek, 34, need a fight against Peter just to get a fight against Klitschko, when Adamek already is pretty much set to fight Wladimir in September in Poland.

It seems to me that it’s a waste of time completely for Adamek to risk getting knocked cold by Peter when Adamek already has the Klitschko fight in the bag. If it’s me, I’d say forget the Peter fight altogether. Adamek needs to focus on the Klitschko fight and use the April 16th date to fight another one of his fluff opponents that Adamek has been feasting on since moving up to the heavyweight division.

Peter is still got a little life in him and I can see him knocking Adamek out at some point in the fight even with Adamek running for his life. We’ve already seen that Adamek doesn’t react well when he’s hit in the head by hard shots. He’s been lucky to have faced guys like Arreola, who injured his left hand early and ran out of gas at the midpoint in the fight.

Adamek was also hurt by 38-year-old Michael Grant. That was a fight in which Grant threw hardly anything until the final rounds and still had Adamek staggering around the ring. If you put Adamek in with a guy like Peter, I see nothing but bad things coming from this fight.

Adamek is an excellent runner, but he’s still too short to keep Peter from finding his chin in every round. This is a fight Adamek would be wise to duck. It’s one thing Adamek facing a bunch of old codgers to pad his record with fight after fight, but it’s another thing to actually face a real contender like Peter.

There’s no question about it, Adamek will get knocked out by Peter unless Adamek sprints around the ring all night and doesn’t throw anything. Once he starts throwing punches, Peter will have his chance.
