Should we take David Haye seriously

By Derek Holian: There is an old Spanish proverb “Tell me what you brag about and I’ll tell you what you lack. It’s true to say as a Heavyweight David Haye has managed to split the opinion of most boxing fans, not that boxing fans were ever a congruous or harmonious lot to begin. But are Hayes fans viewing him through rose tinted spectacles or can the claims they assert be vindicated?

Well analyzing the Klitchko brothers is a far (and I stress) a far easier task, as the analysis of the brothers would be based upon their longevity. Their defences as Champions propel them rightfully to the top of the Heavyweight division. However the question here is “How seriously should we the Boxing fans take David Haye“??

So lets try ignore the fact that Haye pulled out of fights with both Klitchkos and also lets refrain from the recent so called negotiations that ended with both parties claiming that the other did not want this fight. infact lets forget all Hayes amateur dramatics, the picture of the severed Klitchko head and all the distasteful chat that came with it. Lets judge Haye purely on how seriously he truly deserves to be taken.

This is where it gets difficult for me to take Haye that seriously. Let me explain why. Well first of course Haye takes the WBA Title from Valuev in November of 2009 right? Everybody is already aware of Hayes much publicised vow that he made as a 17-year-old amateur boxer that he would retire aged 31 which will be this coming October . That gives Haye less then two years to re-invent what he calls a lacklustre division and to mount a serious challenge to the Klitchkos as Premiere title holder. But what has David managed in his first 14 months as WBA champ? Well he has managed to fight twice against Ruiz and Harrison and if his fans are lucky they may get to see him fight twice more against similar opposition before his big end to a small career .

I doubt I’m alone when I say that if Haye and his camp were as confident as they seemed to be, especially knowing his career was limited to less than 2 years; then they would have made a far more strenuous attempt to achieve a lot more in that short space of time. Like maybe fight 7 times against far better opposition rather than two men with a combined 12 loss record.

If you truly avoid being biased and judge Haye purely on his merits as WBA Champ. Then Apart from Ruffle a few feathers so far what else has Haye realistically achieved at Heavyweight that any truly educated unbiased boxing fan should take him seriously. The Answer is ABSOLUTELY Nothing.
