Saul Alvarez vs. Vyacheslav Senchenko not looking good

By Dan Ambrose: The proposed bout between unbeaten welterweight/junior middleweight contender Saul Alvarez (35-0-1, 26 KO’s) and unbeaten World Boxing Association (WBA) welterweight champion Vyacheslav Senchenko (31-0, 20 KO’s) looks like it won’t be taking place. Fightnews is reporting that the negotiations aren’t working out between the two fighters.

It was considered a long shot to begin with because Senchenko has other possibilities in winnable fights against guys like Matthew Hatton, Brad Solomon or Mike Jones. Alvarez, with his big power, would be a lot of trouble because he’s strong enough to beat Senchnko even if he’s getting out-boxed by him. In addition, Alvarez is a big welterweight and currently holds the WBC Silver junior middleweight title. After re-hydrating, Alvarez would be the equivalent of a big junior middleweight or middleweight facing the slender Senchenko.

It would make the fight even harder for Senchenko to win. The Ukrainian is much better off defending his title against the smaller, weaker in comparison to Alvarez, Matthew Hatton. That’s a fight that Senchenko would have an excellent chance of winning, as Hatton has problems against pure boxers and Senchenko has very good boxing skills, if not power.

The 20-year-old Alvarez needs to move up in weight permanently and focus on going after top junior middleweights like WBA champion Miguel Cotto, Sergeii Dzinziruk, Alfredo Angulo, Kermit Cintron, Paul Williams and Antonio Margarito. If Alvarez wants to be considered a good fighter, he’s going to have to start being put in with guys in his own weight division that are in their 20s to early 30s instead of taking on 39-year-old fighters over and over again. Alvarez has faced Carlos Baldomir and Lovemore N’dou in his last two fights. Both of those guys are 39.
