Alvarez, 20, had been attempting to get a title shot against WBA welterweight champion Vyacheslav Senchenko, but the Ukrainian fighter wasn’t satisfied with the money that was offered for the fight. HBO will possibly be showing the fight with the chance of fight between Robert Guerrero and Michael Katsidis being shown as well.

Hatton, 29, is the younger brother of former two division world champion Ricky Hatton, and isn’t nearly the same kind of puncher as him. Matthew is more of a finesse type of fighter and is known for having great technical skills and an ability to move around the ring. Matthew recently showed that he can punch to the body like his older brother Ricky in stopping challenger Roberto Belge in the 3rd round on November 26th in Hatton’s second title defense of his EBU belt. Before that, Hatton defeated Yuriy Nuzhnenko by a 12 round decision after getting up off the canvas in the 1st in July 2010.

Alvarez is considered a future champion at welterweight and junior middleweight. He’s got great right hand power, but is still very much a raw fighter at this stage in his career. His promoters with Golden Promotions have been matching him recently against 39-year-old former champions Carlos Baldomir and Lovemore N’dou. Alvarez passed those tests with flying colors, but still looks badly flawed and wide open on defense. This perhaps is going to be career-long problem for Alvarez, as he doesn’t seem able to track incoming shots very well. In March 2010, Alvarez was staggered in the 1st round by lightweight Jose Miguel Cotto. Alvarez was able to recover and eventually win the fight by a 9th round stoppage, but it wasn’t a good sign seeing Alvarez staggered by a fighter three divisions smaller than him.
