Mosley-Pacquiao: Shane needs to rough up Manny

By Dave Lahr: I don’t like Shane Mosley’s chances against Manny Pacquiao on May 7th. I don’t think much of Pacquiao as a fighter, but he is good enough to beat up on the 40ish Mosley, I’ll give him that. Bob Arum is really looking out for his number #1 cash cow Pacquiao by putting him in with guys as shot as Mosley and as beaten up and depleted as Miguel Cotto, Joshua Clottey and Antonio Margarito. That’s good match-making. But I’m not giving Pacquiao a sure 100% win in the case of Mosley.

I think Mosley has a sliver of a chance if he goes mid-evil on Pacquiao. That’s only way that Mosley can beat the little Filipino because he’s too fast and Mosley is too far gone at this point in his career. This is why Mosley needs desperate measures if he wants to win this fight. Mosley has got to sit down and map out the perfect roughhouse tactics to use against Pacquiao. He’s going to have to reach for every tool in the toolkit to get this win, and I’m talking every tool. It’s going to take some body slams, some nice elbows, rabbit punches galore, lacing, throwing Pacquiao over the ropes, shoving him down, twisting his body like a pretzel, holding and hitting, leaning on, and wrestling to get the win.

Mosley, as shot as he is, can’t just use one of these weapons, he’s going to use a variation of all of them to get the win. I’m not in favor of Mosley resorting to fouling because I’d like the guy to win on his own merits, but the only way I can see Mosley winning this fight is if he fouls like no tomorrow and the referee is ignoring it all. It’s possible the referee will allow Mosley to get away with fouling to his heart’s content. After all, being an old famous fighter like Mosley, the referee might choose to look the other way while Mosley goes to down on Pacquiao and body slams and fouls him. It will surely make for an ugly fight, but it’s probably the only way Mosley can win this fight. He’s just too shot to win on boxing skills and experience alone. For him to win, he’s going to have to reach for the bottom or the took box to get the special tools to win.
