Image: McEwan to fight on Khan-Peterson undercard on April 16thBy Dan Ambrose: Unbeaten middleweight contender Craig McEwan 19-0, 10 KO’s) will be fighting on the undercard of the Amir Khan vs. Lamont Peterson fight card on April 16th at the M.E.N. Arena, in Manchester, England. McEwan, 28, doesn’t have an opponent picked out yet, but he’s looking forward to the fight none the less. McEwan will be fighting before that on January 28th against a still to be determined opponent. McEwan will be sparring with unbeaten middleweight contender Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. to get ready for the bout.

McEwan is trained by Freddie Roach and is ranked at #12 by the WBO middleweight division. McEwan seems to have decent skills, but not much power. He needs to start being moved upwards soon against better opposition because he’s being kept down far too long and is wasting away against lesser fighters. At some point they’re going to have to take a chance and see what they have in McEwan, because he’s probably not going to be getting much better at this point in his career. It didn’t look that he dropped by a fight hand in his last fight against Danny Perez in July 2010, and barely escaped with a 10 round majority decision. This was someone that came into the McEwan fight having lost his last two bouts. McEwan should have been able to beat Perez without any problems if he was any good, yet he went life and death with him.

He’s two short years away from 30, and that’s a ripe age for someone that’s never even fought a top tier opponent before. At 28, you’re expected to at least cut your teeth against quality opposition and not still wasting time fighting B level fighters over and over again. There must be something that’s got them worried about McEwan, because otherwise they would have taken the training wheels off a long time ago and put him in with someone that can actually fight. I think they need to put him in a situation where he’ll be forced to fight hard to survive, like in a bout against someone like Matthew Macklin, Fernando Guerrero or Kelly Pavlik. McEwan it’s helped that he’s kind of a slick boxer with a hit and run style of fighting. I can see him having problems getting people to fight him.
